Day 18: Mind Control

Summary: He couldn’t get his mind off it, what it might mean.

Characters: Danny, Sam, Tucker.

It was almost slow motion as the crystal ball shattered, brilliant specs of scarlet bouncing lightly off the shining metal of the train. In that same moment, Danny had jumped from the moving locomotive in order to catch one of his friends - but ghosts didn’t have friends - before she met a horrific end at the bottom of the ravine. As her weight settled comfortably in his arms, something within him snapped, releasing a sudden burst of memories as if a dam had broken. His head throbbed sharply in protest, shaking slightly to attempt to alleviate it. The world swam before him, shutting eyes that were melting from a greedy red to a warm green. When he opened them again, Sam was staring at him, expression tight with concern.

“Are you ok?” she inquired, amethyst eyes searching his own. His mouth fell open and snapped shut several times, eventually appeasing her with an affirmative. If only he was as sure as he sounded. He landed on the train and set Sam to her feet, ignoring the wavering way in which he stood.

When he was able to transform, the sudden wave of exhaustion nearly sent him into a crumpled heap at everyone’s feet. He couldn’t remember ever feeling so drained, not even when he’d first started using his powers in earnest. Sam, without even needing a prompting, hooked her arm around on of his in support, Tucker mirroring her on the opposite side. He sent them weary grins in gratitude, unsure of how long he would have been able to keep upright on his own.

The heavy bags beneath his eyes had faded only slightly the next morning, his movements still lethargic. It worried him how much Freakshow’s damned ball had exhausted him. Sam had said it was because of the strength he’d fought back with to regain control of his own actions, his own thoughts, but that’s exactly what terrified him the most. His will hadn’t been strong enough to break from the twisted clown’s grasp and had practically drained himself to nothing in an attempt to do so.

What if he wasn’t strong enough to protect his family and friends next time? He’d barely had enough to rescue them this time… But even the thought of what might happen with a stronger foe chilled his very core. He wasn’t enough. He knew that for certain.

Day 17: Jealousy

(This one’s really short. Ugh…)

Summary: Danny always looked back on the event with a sort of irony.

Characters: Danny

Danny always looked back at the first Desiree incident with a sort of irony. He’d been so surprised to find out that Tucker had been jealous of him, jealous enough to even feel some faint resentment. It was at this point of his thought process that Danny laughed quietly to himself, shaking his head. If only Tucker realized how unbearably jealous Danny was of him.

He would never find out; it was something that Danny kept close to his heart, a secret he must never see the light of day. But yes, he was jealous. He was envious of his best friend’s humanity.

Ever since the accident, he’d slept with one eye open, forever checking over his shoulder. In the beginning, it was absolutely necessary due to his lack of control. Now, it was more of a safety issue. He couldn’t even begin to count the differences between him and his best friend, things they used to share as similarities. But these powers changed everything, altering even the humanity he used to take for granted.

So he let Tucker harbor his jealousy. At least he was human.

Day 16: Future

(I am sooo late with this. My muse randomly ran away, but randomly came back today so expect three stories in a row.)

Summary: The results are in, Danny just hopes they don’t say ‘destroyer of the world’

Characters: Danny, Sam, Tucker

Danny swallowed around the uncomfortably large lump in his throat, staring fearfully at the official envelope in his rather sweaty hands. Sam and Tucker stood behind him in support, their sympathetic anxiety reflecting his own. He wondered briefly how long he’d be able to avoid opening it. Shaking his head, he turned it over, revealing the glimmering seal. It was just like that seal that he’d felt no qualms in breaking not so long ago, the sparkling letters of CAT glaring up at him. He managed to jam his thumb nail under the fold before hesitating again.

“All at once, Danny,” Sam reminded him softly. “Just like a band-aid.” They’d both already seen their results of this stupid test, admitting that it hadn’t been that bad. But of course, it was also so very different for him. These results meant everything. They symbolized his determination, but also his weakness. If something so simple as cheating on a test could beckon him towards a future of darkness, then what else could flip that switch? The thought kept him awake at night.

He took Sam’s advice and ripped open the envelope, tugging its contents loose. Blue eyes skimmed down the page, an odd feeling of relief brushing his insides. He froze, however, at the list of possible jobs, his expression twisting strangely. His lips trembled and he eventually collapsed into his chair, pillowing his head into the arms he had rested on his desk not a moment earlier. Sam and Tucker grew concerned until a giggle escaped from their friend, soon escalating into full-on, unrestrained (and slightly hysterical) laughter. Sam raised an eyebrow and yanked the results from her friend’s hand, Tucker joining her in scanning the document. They soon joined the halfa in laughter, celebrating what didn’t happen.

The paper fell face up on the floor, revealing average results as well as a list of average jobs that one could start working towards. On the bottom of the recommendations, the suggestion ‘bus boy’ had been made, almost tacked on as a joke.

If this hero thing doesn’t work out, I always have a promising career as a bus boy.
